Monday, December 6th

Daddy slept here last night, while I went home with the big kids and Grandma. It was good to be home and iron out some things. I missed you. I know you are in good hands and I couldn't have left you if Daddy wasn't here. I slept for 8.5 hours though. That is good.
Got Olivia on the bus. She misses you and wishes she could come see you after school, but with traffic I don't think it's a good idea. She sent kisses and hugs with me. . so did Lance and Grandma.
When I got to the hospital today you were doing okay. I actually heard the word "improvement" today. They took you off one of your blood pressure meds, but may possibly need to go back on. You are a little more alert. You have moved your hands and lip. Not much, but I saw some life in you. . .felt good.
I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude today. All the faces of those that have helped us the past few days keep going through my mind and tears immediately follow. I think of the EMT's that brought you to the hospital. They were the closest to angels that I have ever met in my life. All the doctors, surgeons, nurses that rushed and helped you on Friday night. I am convinced that they were tied to you in a way that can only be described as spiritual. They knew you and your needs. . and saved you. How can I sufficiently thank someone for that?
You are my angel. You always have been. You get better. I love you, little booger :)

  1. Betsy,

I just read this had a good cry for you and all that you are going through. This whole situation just breaks my heart and makes me wish I were close enough to help. I know we don't see each other often anymore, but know that we love you, Mark, and your sweet little kids. Both of my kids talk often about going to see their friends in Washington again soon! We are definitely thinking of you as you go through this trial, and we'd help in any way possible.

I have always admired your strong faith, and I know that it will bring you through this. You are such a great example of someone with a strong testimony and a special example of a wonderful mother. All of this in addition to being a wonderful friend. I am sure there are many prayers being offered for little William, as well as the rest of you. I hope you will all feel the comfort of the prayers on your behalf.

Know that we love you and we are here for you! Please call if you need ANYTHING!

    Love,
    Meredith

  2. Betsy,

Thanks for documenting what is happening to your little darling. I wish we were closer and could lend a hand, but you can count on us for prayers! I will put your names in the temple when I go later this week.

I'm so sorry this is happening, but I admire your faith and courage. Hang on!!

    Love,

    Heidi

  3. I have always felt that I could take any pain as long as my children were spared pain. It is heart wrenching to think of what you are going through. You will be in our prayers. Interestingly enough, I had a band around my intestines around the same age. It resolved itself after some scary moments for my parents, but nothing like what you are going through. Thank heaven for children's hospitals everywhere and the wonderful caregivers in them. We send our love!

  4. Dear Russels,

My heart is broken for what you all are going through. I know though that you are in the best place possible if this is something that William has to go through.

Dallin and I have spent a total of ten weeks at Doernbechers and is it truly a place of miracles. By what you have said you have seen many miracles since Friday...with many more to come.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers. I pray for you to all have strength and the power to move ahead knowing that Will has the love and prayers of so many. I felt many times there the arms of our loving Father in Heaven around me when times were tough, He is there with you all as well. Especially your sweet baby.

All our love sent your way. Please let me know if I can help in any way.

    Casey

  5. Betsy,
I am so happy to hear that there is some "improvement" in him. It will most likely be slow progress, but progress none the less. Our prayers are with you.

The people at Doernbecher's are amazing. We were there for 2 weeks recently and I was amazed by the staff.

I learned during my stay that it is important to let the volunteers that come and offer to watch William, watch him. Go and take a quick break to walk around the hospital (over by the tram there are some fantastic views) or just go have a cup of hot cocoa and read the paper. Also talking with the other parents is nice too. An eggcrate twin size foam pad is a wonderful thing and will make nights at the hospital much better!

When we were there we brought our own food in cans and boxes that could be cooked or heated in the microwave. It was a lifesaver for the budget and much better than having to eat the cafeteria food all the time (the omelets are divine if you ask them to use less oil though).

I would love to come up and see you and to help you out in any way I can. Please let me know what works best for you. I can come on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday during the day. Keep the faith and try to keep your spirits up.

    See ya soon.

    Marcella

  6. Betsey & family..
I want you guys to know how much we are sending prayers to little will and your sweet family. We have gotten to know OHSU very well over the years, and I know, when you said that about your doctors.. you are so right. I feel each child has hand picked special angels watching out for them, little will is in great hands.
I heard this the other day, and thought how sweet this was. When our little guy had to be in the hospital, a friend reminded me about my favorite poem, Footprints, she said.. " he will be ok andrea, remember the footprints in the sand."

Please let me know what I can do to help you guys out, I would love to come and visit, bring you hot cocoa up there, what ever you need please let me know.. .. A nice soft pillow.. Hang in there betsey!

It's So great that you started this blog for will, it's so sweet about Olivia and her sweet day at school. Kids are truly so sweet!
